My dogs eat cauliflower, do yours? I'm not mentioning this as a way to showboat about what good eaters my dogs are. I'm genuinely curious if other dogs eat cauliflower...and broccoli. I was prepping dinner and got started with a head of cauliflower when my two came bolting into the kitchen to wait. You'd think I'd opened the container of dried beef liver they were so excited. They truly love the crunchy veggies. Well, hold up, sometimes Muddy will turn his nose up at a head of cauli- I get it...sometimes it's just so delicious and other times it's meh. But here's why I'm curious...I've googled healthy snacks, what foods are bad for dogs and such, but I don't think I've ever come across a list that includes cauliflower or broccoli or cantaloupe for that matter. So, off I went to figure out if I was feeding my pups a superfood or a super mess them up treat haha.
Here's what I found- cauliflower is a healthy snack for dogs when given in moderation. It is low in calories and contains fiber, vitamins C and K, calcium, and potassium, which can support your dog’s immune system, digestion, and overall health.
Serve it plain, either raw or steamed, without added butter, oils, or seasonings, just to be safe, plus why add seasonings when you're dog may be content eating it plain. Start with small amounts to ensure it agrees with your dog’s stomach. My dogs seem to have iron stomachs, able to handle more than a taste of the white stuff lol! With any new foods, it's always a good idea to check in with your vet and run your new snack idea by them :)
How about that broccoli? Found a little info about that too- broccoli is safe and healthy for dogs in small amounts. It provides vitamins C, K, and A, fiber, and antioxidants, which can benefit their immune system and digestion. However, too much broccoli can, you guessed it! cause an upset stomach and unpleasant side effects, mostly because of it's high fiber content. Serve it the same way- plain and either raw or steamed. Keep it simple. Keep it in small servings.
And last but not least, I looked in to cantaloupe, because there is never a time that I'm preparing the fruit that I don't have a mutt sitting at my feet and begging for a morsel. I found a bit about that too- cantaloupe is a healthy treat for dogs in moderation. It's low in calories, high in vitamins A and C, and contains hydration benefits. Of course you'll want to remove the rind and seeds :) It's a perfect summer treat for my two :)
Here's a list, the list you'll most often find, listing fruits and veggies that are good for our dogs.
- Carrots – Low-calorie and great for teeth cleaning.
- Blueberries – Rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
- Apple slices (without seeds) – A refreshing snack packed with fiber and vitamins.
- Green beans – Crunchy and low-calorie.
- Bananas – A good source of potassium in moderation.
- Pumpkin (plain, cooked) – Excellent for digestion.
- Cucumber slices – Hydrating and low-calorie.
- Sweet potatoes (cooked, plain) – Rich in fiber and nutrients.
- Watermelon (seedless) – Hydrating and a sweet treat.
If our dogs choose super healthy whole foods, why not indulge them and leave the processed treats on the shelf for another day ;)
